IWM Launches New Online Magazine This Fall
Inter\val, a new online magazine, explores fundamental changes in the classical music world today. Inter\val presents interesting and informative stories and conversations with musicians, significant figures, composers, ensembles, and change-makers in the classical music world. Classical music does not live in a vacuum, so Inter\val also features the classical music of Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas. You will find thoughtful profiles of artists, recordings, video performances, and podcasts while exploring their larger cultural significance. Followers and subscribers can expect to gain a richer context for the people re-imagining performance and cultural production in the 21st century.
The supporting content actively highlights the contributions of people of color to classical music historically and presently. Interval is celebratory and analytical, rather than depressive or pedestrian. We follow specific musicians, ensembles, and artists throughout long-term projects, promoting their stories, successes, processes, and events. Programs and content are intended for online distribution. Inter\val is a platform produced by IWM.
Inter\val is a play on words - an interval at a classical music concert is the time in between the music, the intermission where you can stretch, converse, and explore the program notes at a classical music concert. By splitting the word in two the first half - inter, invites you to enter this community of audience and musicians' dialog. The "val" is value - the knowledge that classical music isn't a monolith, but a living, ever-changing idea that we will only evolve through exploration and understanding.
